Metric spacing on an imperial page
There is nothing contradictory about 5 mm dots on an 8.5 × 11 inch sheet — the dots simply need to be centred rather than aligned to an edge, which is what this generator does. You get a whole number of dots across with an even margin either side, instead of a stray half-column at the right edge.
Good for planning, bad for tracing
Dot grid excels when you want faint structure that disappears once you have written over it. It is a poor choice if you need to trace or measure precisely, because there are no continuous lines to follow. For measured drawing, use graph paper; for freehand layout with a sense of alignment, dots win.
Binder-friendly margins
If you are punching these for a three-ring binder, raise the margin to about 20 mm before downloading. The generator keeps the dot field inside the margin, so nothing gets destroyed by the hole punch.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100% — not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
